Class Description

Study a different composer/lyricist each class, learning about their history as well as their unique creative style.

Students will look at the breadth and depth of one creative team each week to learn their musical aesthetic and understand how their work changed over the decades.

In a mix of lecture-style and online coaching with student performances of individual songs, this workshop introduces students to a wide range of musical styles, voices, and repertoire.

Students who wish to sing during one of the workshop weeks, must submit a video of them singing their selected song to Kristina Friedgen at kristina@yaa.org no later than 1 week before the scheduled class.

Class Description

Step inside different facets of the musical theatre industry over two workshop sessions with YAA artist and cast member of Escape to Margaritaville, Trent Soyster.

Workshop topics to include:

  • APRIL 10: MT Dance "mock audition" panel with Trent and guest Sophie Braud (Graduate of Oklahoma City University, Escape to Margaritaville National Tour, Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma). A Musical Theatre-style combo will be sent out in advance via slack for students to learn the combo in advance, should they choose to. We will start with a quick warm-up followed by a review/clarify questions about the combo before breaking into groups to perform and get feedback from the panel. Short Q&A at the end of class.

  • APRIL 17: Acting/Singing "mock audition" panel with Trent and guests Mia Gerachis (Graduate of NYU, Elf National Tour as Jovie, Creator of Bored Belting on TikTok.) and Eli Tokash (Finding Neverland and Pippin on Broadway, Host of Take A Bow Podcast). Those interested should prepare 16-32 bars of a song from the Musical Theatre canon to sing for the panel and get feedback on. Short Q&A at the end of class.

  • APRIL 21: Wicked Master Class with guest Jeff Heimbrock (from the Broadway productions of Wicked and The Book of Mormon). We will spend the hour learning some material from Wicked and then do a talkback with Jeff!
